    this phwew is delightful - i recall seeing the original and it is phwew - i'm not sure at the time the significance was first appreciated but i know that shortly after it was discretely removed from public showing, this was quite a while ago

    the subject involves a steam bath where, in the good old days, an implenent was used to scrape the sweat from the skin, i cannot immediately recall what it is called but a classic item

    in this depiction though the device has been somewhat smoothed and rounded and the lady has a blushed satisfaction on her face - the painting is life sized and it is as L indicates phwew

  3. I have to say this is a favourite picture of mine. I first saw it at the Tate about ten years ago(The Victorian Nude). If you can get hold of the book that went with it, you'll find some in depth comments including that it was bought by Pears soap of all people.
